Our foam hopper fly is easy to see with a big parachute tie for visibility, thus the "para" and big eyes to attract big fish, thus the "toon". Foam body keeps it on top. Fish on windy days near the banks in the summer when the hoppers are in the grass. On your way to the stream see if you kick up a few hoppers in the grass. This stonefly pattern is based on golden stones which are members of the Perlidae family and are the most common stoneflies around the country. Not very important during their hatch due to the fact they crawl out of the water to hatch, they live for a month and become trout targets during their egg laying when they hover and land on the water. Due to their size and caloric richness, trout will go out of their way to eat a big stone. Developed by Charles Obermeyer for the Mother's Day caddis hatch on the Arkansas River, this sparkle caddis fly pattern is remarkably durable due to its construction, and it apparently works; it was tested by numerous Orvis testers and was designated the Hot New Pattern for 2007. This caddis fly pattern reportedly caught 44 fish in five hours during the Mother's Day hatch. No reason to doubt that claim, but even if half true, that's a fly worth having in your fly box.
